Inspired by his Uncle Henry’s overseas experiences in the U.S. Navy, Gardner decided to join the military after completing his secondary education. He spent four years as a hospital corpsman at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.
Following his military service, Gardner received a life-changing opportunity when Dr. Robert Ellis, a renowned San Francisco cardiac surgeon, offered him a job in cutting-edge clinical research at the University of California Medical Center & Veterans Management Hospital in San Francisco. Relocating to San Francisco in 1974, Gardner gained invaluable experience in laboratory work and surgical procedures over two years.
In 1981, after his military release, Gardner worked as a research lab assistant at UCSF & the Veterans’ Hospital. However, his inadequate income of approximately $8,000 per year was insufficient to support his live-in girlfriend & child. Seeking financial stability, he transitioned to a career in sales, specifically selling medical equipment, which allowed him to double his income.
Entrepreneurship
A chance experience with a sharply dressed man in a red Ferrari outside San Francisco General Hospital changed Gardner’s life trajectory. When he learned that the man was a stockbroker, Gardner found his calling.
In 1987, in Chicago, Illinois, he founded Gardner Rich & Co., an institutional brokerage firm focus on in debt, equity, & derivative product transactions for major institutions, public pension systems, and unions across the country. With a meager $10,000 in startup funds & a single piece of furniture—a wooden desk that also served as the family dining table—Gardner launched his business from his modest Presidential Towers apartment.
The inclusion of “Rich” in the company’s name paid homage to commodities trader Marc Rich, even though Gardner had never met him. In 2006, after selling his small stake in Gardner Rich in a multimillion-dollar deal, Gardner traditional Christopher Gardner International Holdings, serving as its CEO.

Jackie became pregnant with his child, leading to Gardner’s divorce from Sherry after three years of marriage. He embarked on fatherhood & a new life with Jackie. It took nine years for Gardner and Sherry to finalize their divorce, which was eventually granted in 1986. On January 28, 1981, Christopher Jarrett Gardner Jr., his son, was born.
